It was called the East \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eAfrican Coronation Safari. It became \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ethe East African Safari Rally, joined \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ethe World Rally Championship, and for \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003etwo decades was considered the hardest \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003emotorsport event on earth.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"_chunkWrapper_yu34g_39\"\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eThere were \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eno special stages. The whole route was \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ethe race. Most years the majority of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ethe field never made the finish ramp. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eIn 1974, sixteen cars out of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eninety-nine made it home.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"_chunkWrapper_yu34g_39\"\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eEach country counted as one leg. Hence three coffees.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"_chunkWrapper_yu34g_39\"\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eAnd running behind \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ethe whole thing, at half the pace and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003etwice the load, were the Land Rovers. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eFrom 1948 onwards the Safari Land Rover \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ewas a fixture right across East \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eAfrica — and the rally support convoys \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ewere no different, stacked with spare \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ewheels and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ejerrycans, shadowing the works cars \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ethrough the dust. Nobody puts the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003esupport vehicle on the poster. From then on the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eSafari ran in Kenya alone. The \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ethree-country rally ran from 1953 to \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003e1972. We found three exceptional East \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eAfrican coffees and realised the rally \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ehad crossed all three \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ecountries — the same ground, the same \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ered dust. East Africa is where coffee \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eactually comes from: Kenya for \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ebrightness, Tanzania for depth, Uganda \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003efor a smooth chocolatey arabica \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003ealmost nobody expects.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"_chunkWrapper_yu34g_39\"\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"_animating_yu34g_10\"\u003eThree legs.
